Cray is a playable Monk in the games Shining Force Gaiden and Shining Force CD.


Background

Cray's background is not entirely clear, as some vital details are omitted, but the following seems the most likely story from the clues given. Prior to Shining Force Gaiden, Cray lived on Miniyom with his wife and young sister, pictured below.

When Cypress invaded Miniyom, he joined the Cypress army; how he was able to gain their trust is not explained. However, when Cypress soldiers began harassing his sister he fought back and was beaten senseless. It is at this point that an expedition from Guardiana arrives and rescues her. Cray promptly joins the Guardianans and uses the trust he had earned from the Cypress soldiers to break into the Miniyom bastion.

At some point Cray's wife goes missing. After some fruitless searching, Cray attends Prince Nick's coronation in hopes of finding her, perhaps suspecting that she was abducted by either Woldol's soldiers seeking revenge on Cray for his betrayal or the Cypress resistance trying to coerce him into continuing to fight Woldol. He was apparently unsuccessful in this endeavor.


Personality

Cray's sole loyalty seems to be to his family. He joined the Cypress army when they invaded Guardiana, possibly so that he and his family would not be harmed. Later, after he joined the force from Guardiana, he showed no qualms about using the trust of his former comrades from Cypress and turning it against them.


Strategy

Cray has lower HP, MP, and Defense than other monks, and it can be difficult to keep him alive in the early battles. However, he has a very good spell selection including Boost, even if it can be frustrating how little he can use it with his limited MP. More importantly, he has the highest Attack of the Shining Force CD monks, making him very useful as a fighter.

If you want a full-time spellcaster or someone who can take a few hits, look elsewhere. But if you want a character who can leave an enemy groaning and clutching his stomach after just one punch, Cray is your man.
