Claude (バリー, Barī^?, Barry in Japanese) is a playable Birdman in the games Shining Force Gaiden, Shining Force Gaiden II, and Shining Force CD.

Background

At the time of Shining Force Gaiden, Claude is a member of the Cypress resistance, a collection of Cypress citizens banded together to fight against Woldol's oppression. When the resistance hears of an expedition from Guardiana invading Cypress, they send Claude to contact the Guardianans and arrange an alliance with them. He is then captured in Miniyom Bastion, awaiting rescue. Claude succeeds in finding the Guardiana expedition and leading them to the resistance base, whereupon they join forces.

After the defeat of Woldol, Claude joins the Cypress army. He takes part in the invasion of Iom in Shining Force Gaiden II. The Cypress army is defeated, but Claude eludes capture and regroups with a band of young soldiers from Cypress under Mayfair's command. The Cypress army succeeds in defeating Iom and rescuing Prince Nick.

In Book 3 of Shining Force CD, Claude is part of the party aiding Prince Nick in his coronation trials.

Personality

Claude is an industrious warrior, always eager to use his unique talents to help. He seems to specialize in dangerous solo missions where his flight allows him to reach the objective much faster than normal operatives would.

Strategy

In Shining Force Gaiden

Claude is a powerhouse, with high Attack, solid HP, and much better Defense than Shriek even when promoted at level 10. Adding in his strategically valuable flight ability, he is an obvious choice for the active party if you're looking for an easy game.

In Shining Force Gaiden II (a.k.a.The Sword of Hajya)

Though his stats are slightly lower than in Gaiden I, this time Claude is your only available flier. He is still a powerful unit and with some strategic placement may be of great help in taking out those menacing level 3 spellcasters. If you decide to use him, be extra careful of where you place him; you don't want him taken out in one hit by a level 3 spell.

In Shining Force CD

The Book 1 version of Claude has moderated stats compared to his Gaiden I counterpart, with the lowest HP and Attack of the three birdmen in the game. He is still a very powerful flier, however, and it's not a bad idea to use both him and Shriek.

However, for Books 3 and 4 it is best to take the Book 2 version of Claude, as his stats are actually slightly better than in Gaiden II, with Defense that is most impressive by flier standards. To do this, make sure you level Book 2 Claude higher than Book 1 Claude, as the one with the highest level is the one whose stats will be transferred to Book 3.
