Iom is a kingdom in the original Shining universe, apparently named for the god worshiped by most of its people. It is briefly alluded to in the game Shining Force Gaiden and went on to be one of the key players in Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya and Shining Force CD.

Background[]

Nothing is said explicitly about Iom's history; however, it can be deduced from the central role that the god Iom holds that the nation's founding is a parallel to that of the real world nation Israel. Iom in some way rescued or protected the original people of the nation, or at least took credit for doing so, and as a result these people came to regard themselves as the god's chosen people, naming their new country after him.

According to Hindel, "The law of the land states, if one is unable to protect oneself, one deserves to die," which suggests that the people of Iom have grown accustomed to a harsh and militaristic way of life, very likely so as to serve their god's desires. None of the known neighboring nations give any indication of having had positive relations with Iom, which further supports the theory that they have been an aggressor nation, at least for the few decades prior to Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya.

Places[]

  • Demis - A port city. Though Deanna's party passes through it, it is never actually seen in the games.
  • Algam Fields - A hilly, forested region where the Cypress army was ambushed
  • Algam Fort - An important military post, named for the fields which it overlooks
  • Iom Castle - An imposing military fortress
  • Shrine of Iom - An enormous shrine devoted to the nation's patron god
