Mayfair is a playable female Priest character in the games Shining Force Gaiden and Shining Force CD, and serves as the force's advisor and priest(of the non-playable variety) in Shining Force Gaiden II and Shining Force CD. She was the first female advisor of the Shining series.

Background[]

Mayfair is the daughter of the Archbishop of Cypress and a prominent member of the Cypress resistance. Though the game is not explicit about the matter, the desperation with which the Cypress army hunts her suggests that she is the leader of the resistance on Asreet Island. Sometime prior to Shining Force Gaiden, Woldol killed Mayfair's father and blinded her; whether this happened before or after she became part of the Cypress resistance is not known.

When an expedition from Guardiana invaded Cypress, Mayfair joined them at the first opportunity, not knowing that the leader of the expedition is also her rightful king, Nick. Whether she joined the expedition because she reasoned that the Guardianans would help overthrow Woldol as part of their mission, because she wanted to keep an eye on them in case they tried to take control of Cypress, simply out of an altruistic desire to help people, or some combination of those three reasons, is open to speculation.

After Shining Force Gaiden, which concludes with Woldol's death and the liberation of Cypress, Prince Nick appoints Mayfair to an unnamed position involving maintaining the security of Cypress and training new recruits to the Cypress army. Mayfair comes to develop a close motherly relationship with many of the recruits. Her sight also returns at this point, perhaps as a result of Woldol's death.

In Shining Force Gaiden 2, Nick leads an invasion of Iom and the Sword of Hajya is stolen under Mayfair's watch. She immediately commands a squad of the new recruits to pursue the thief and accompanies them to offer her guidance and services as a priest. After they recover the Sword of Hajya, Hindel anonymously tips them off to the fact that Nick has been captured. Mayfair turns the squad towards a rescue mission into Iom, where they succeed in saving Prince Nick and defeating Iom. In between these more dire concerns, Mayfair also helps play matchmaker for two of the Cypress recruits, Natasha and Deanna.

In Book 3 of Shining Force CD, Queen Anri of Guardiana is abducted, and Mayfair acts as advisor to the force which goes to her rescue.

Mayfair and Nick are the only two characters to make a real world appearance in Book 4 of Shining Force CD, a brief scenario in which nothing of import happens.

Mayfair wears a white dress with a large red bow and a white hat. She has light skin, black hair, and purple eyes.

Personality[]

Mayfair is a firm authority figure, strict and uncompromising in her values, yet compassionate and forgiving even to her enemies in war. Clearly a very strong person, her personal tragedies do not seem to weigh her down, and she expresses no interest in revenge on Woldol despite his having killed her father and blinded her.

Besides being an effective leader with a cool head and quickly discerning mind, she also shows motherly tendencies in the way she deals with her troops.

Strategy[]

Mayfair joins at a surprisingly low level, but don't let that deter you from using her, as you'll have her for a while before you get a 13th party member, and she's fairly easy to catch up. She has astonishingly high Attack for a vicar and learns the Blast spell, making her an effective offensive unit. She also learns all four levels of both Heal and Aura.

However, she has one major downfall: In Shining Force CD, she is only available as a playable character in Book 1. Besides the disadvantage of not being able to use her on the tough battles of Books 3 and 4, without grinding she will never learn Aura levels 3 or 4. Thus, you may want to consider the alternative, the hidden character Amigo. Amigo can be used in Book 3 and has both the floating ability and far more HP than Mayfair, which can make her easier to keep alive. However, unlike Mayfair, she does not learn Heal and is useless as an offensive unit. Depending on how attached you are to those two advantages of Mayfair, taking Amigo for Book 1 may be the best course.
