Natasha is the leader of the Cypress Shining Force. She serves as a playable Mage in the games Shining Force Gaiden II and Shining Force CD, and is the love interest of Gaiden II's protagonist. Natasha is the only female ever to lead a Shining Force.

Background[]

Natasha is a young soldier of Cypress, but already holds a position of some authority by the time of Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya. She is an extremely focused and dedicated soldier, perhaps in part because of her infatuation with Prince Nick. Whether or not this infatuation is romantic in nature is not clear, but in either case, over the course of the game her heart is won over by the gentle spirit of Deanna instead. She remains devoted to Nick as her prince even after she moves to Iom.

In Book 3 of Shining Force CD we see that Natasha is still with Deanna. Though it is not said explicitly, presumably the two of them are married and still living in Iom.

Natasha is light-skinned and has purple hair and green eyes.

Personality[]

Natasha is a very strong-willed and compassionate individual. A pure and unrelenting idealist, she has a strong dose of patriotism and charisma, qualities that helped earn her the role of Shining Force leader. She fully believes in the cause of Cypress and in the ability of her comrades to serve that cause to the fullest, and is able to inspire some of that same belief in her subordinates. When Deanna's group loses control of their ship, Jaha expresses his certainty that Natasha would know what to do if she were there.

In a more negative side of this devotion to Cypress, she tends to be a workaholic, quickly dismissing Mayfair's concern over her repeatedly taking double guard duty. Beneath her obsession with military duty, however, Natasha has a very warm heart, intensely sympathizing with others in their pain and loss. It is possible that she has a crush on Prince Nick at the beginning of Gaiden II, and certainly her subsequent relationship with Deanna shows how deeply love can take root in Natasha.

Natasha seems to judge herself rather harshly. Besides the perfectionism with which she applies herself to her duties to Cypress, she immediately takes it to heart when Eric blames her for Deanna's shyness, when in truth her compassion has made Deanna more confident in himself. Indeed, on at least one occasion her reaching out to Deanna saved his life.

Strategy[]

In Shining Force Gaiden II/Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya[]

You must be careful with Natasha early on. Her Defense is low, and though her HP is high for a Mage, she won't even come close to being able to survive a casting of Blaze level 3 or Freeze level 3 in the USA version of the game. And it is highly important to keep Natasha leveled up for several reasons. For one, for over half the game you will not have the option of taking her out of the active party. Keeping her alive is also necessary in three particular battles.

However, perhaps the best reason to keep her in shape is that she eventually learns Blaze level 3 and Freeze level 3, extremely overpowered spells in the USA version of the game. Though May learns Freeze level 3 five levels before Natasha learns either of those spells, with level 10 promotions Natasha can cast level 3 spells 4-5 times per battle, whereas May only learns Freeze level 3 and can only cast it 2-4 times per battle. Promoting at level 20 gives Natasha even more advantage, giving her the most destructive power of any character in the game - perhaps in the entire series. In any case, both mages are so powerful that the only reason not to take both is if you want a challenge.

Remember, Natasha's MP is very valuable, so try to conserve it. Don't spend an extra 2 MP on Freeze level 3 if Blaze level 3 will do the same job. Try to save level 3 spells for when you can hit at least three enemies at once, unless you have a good reason. And keep in mind that as powerful as Natasha is, she's still very vulnerable. Keep her out of the enemies' striking range.

In Shining Force CD[]

In the remake Natasha gets more MP but a lot less Defense than she did in Gaiden II. In fact, she has the lowest Defense of any character in SF CD, making her very vulnerable to the increased Attacks of the enemies. Take good care of her; you're still stuck with her for most of Book 2, and she gets the most HP and the most MP of all the Wizards in SF CD. At level 20 promoted she'll have learned the useful Blaze level 4 and Attack level 1, making her an overall good Wizard to have in your party. Moreover, you'll need a well-leveled Natasha if you plan to tackle Book 4.

Powers & Magic[]

Natasha can cast the following spells:

Level 1 - acquires at Level 26
Level 1 - already learned
Level 2 - acquires at Level 8
Level 3 - acquires at Level 17
Level 4 - acquires at Level 30
Level 1 - already learned
Level 1 - acquires at Level 4
Level 2 - acquires at Level 13
Level 3 - acquires at Level 22
