Shining Force CD

Sarah is a kyantol noblewoman of Cypress, and is both an advisor and playable character in Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya and Shining Force CD. She holds a trusted position in Prince Nick's court, accompanying him in his strike against Iom and later assisting Deanna and Natasha's groups to rescue Nick.

In Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya, her class is listed as "SBRN" instead of "VICR" (for Vicar); it is unknown what this is an abbreviation for ("Sage Baron" has been posed amongst others), but may be a translation or name allocation error as the original Japanese version uses the same name as used elsewhere for the Vicar class, and "SBRN" has been used for the Steam Baron class in other Shining games (although none appear in Sword of Hajya).

Appearance[]

Sarah is a Kyantol with light brown fur, blue eyes, and large elf-like ears. Her hair colour and style is unknown as it is completely covered by her headgear, but given all other Kyantols have some form of hair it is likely she also has some hidden from view. Her tall, slim stature suggests that her build may be based on Dachshunds (also known as "sausage dogs").

Sarah wears a yellow armour with white trim that covers her chest, shoulders, wrists and legs; beneath this she wears a brown sleeveless full-body tunic with white sleeves, and on top wears a long white cape. On her head she wears a mitre of the same yellow and white colours, including a white headscarf that covers the back of her head.

In Sword Of Hajya, her outfit is slightly different to that shown in Shining Force CD and her official artwork. In her battle scenes she no longer wears an armoured skirt, and instead of a brown tunic with white sleeves, she now wears a blue sleeved tunic, and her cape and headscarf are now yellow with a blue horizontal stripe near the bottom of her cape. In her portrait, her breastplate appears to be white with yellow trim, and her helm is all yellow with an ornate design; she also has yellow shoulder pads and her headscarf is white, which conflict with her battle scene sprite (where her headscarf is yellow and her shoulderpads are blue).

Background[]

Despite her having a fairly significant role in the story of Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya, almost nothing is known about Sarah. She is a noblewoman of Cypress who was part of Prince Nick's invasion of Iom, and was one of those who escaped the trap set for the invaders.

Since she is clearly a skilled military strategist, it is unlikely that Lady Sarah was neutral in the Cypress civil war, but she is not seen in Shining Force Gaiden, so her role is not known. She may have been commanding a division of the Cypress resistance in another part of the country. She may have sided with King Edmond and only decided to support Nick after his victory in the war. Or she may have feigned loyalty to Edmond while covertly providing information to the Cypress resistance. There is no known information on the matter, though the trust which Prince Nick places in her suggests that she was of some help to his side during the civil war.

Personality[]

Sarah is eager to do her job, serving the Force as a healer and mage.

One of May's quotes suggests that Sarah has a certain affection towards her, as well as a wariness regarding her fellow healer Slade: "Is Slade dangerous? Sarah advised me to be careful of him. But he looks so gentle. I wonder what his problem is?"

Strategy[]

Sarah has many qualities expected of a healer that keep her from being a front line fighter. Despite having reasonable defence strength due to her armour, her low HP makes her highly vulnerable to magic and breath attacks; however, being the only Aura caster in Sword of Hajya (and books 2 and 4 of Shining Force CD), she can easily restore any damage done from such attacks in one casting, making her useful to have at hand when enemies use these attacks. Her agility and movement are standard for a healer (i.e. low agility, 5 movement), but giving her a power up or accessory to increase her movement means she can more easily reach anywhere her healing powers are needed AND keep away from magic and breath casting enemies.

Her Blast magic gives her the ability to aid in ranged combat, and may be best used to soften a number of foes or deal a finishing blow. However, as her strength lies in healing and Aura can use up a lot of MP quickly, it may be worth holding back on using her for attack magic in favour of the more proficient mages unless necessary.

As a healer, Sarah can benefit from "healing abuse" to speed up her growth - casting Heal or Aura on an ally, no matter how much HP is restored, should give her at least 10 experience points, so squeezing out as much of her MP as possible should help her reach level 20 by the end of the game (i.e. book 2 of Shining Force CD). It may be advised to save before each of her level ups in order to make sure her HP grows at each level, as this is her greatest weakness.

Sarah's weapon selection includes staves, rods and flails - the usual equipment available for healers and mages.

Luke: "What? You want us to climb this cliff?! Randolf this is ridiculous! If we climb this cliff, we'll be sitting ducks."
Sarah: "Listen to me. The previous group was defeated because they were ambushed in the Algam fields. We must take the fort before Deanna's group arrives in the Algam fields."
  • Inside Algam Fort
Sarah: "Where are we? I can't see a thing. Where's Solo? How do we get out?"
unfamiliar voice: "Are we having problems?"
Sarah: "Who are you? You must be Solo. Show yourself, you coward."
  • Book 2 headquarters, in active party
Sarah: "Healing? Oh, let me do it! It's my job!"
  • Book 3 headquarters, not in active party
Sarah: "Slade!!! Slade, I know it's you tiouching[sic] me again! ...What? Then who was it?"

Trivia[]

In the English versions, many characters (especially in Shining Force CD) have the same names as characters in other Shining games; in the vast majority of these cases, the original Japanese versions give these characters different names, or they are intended to be the same character. However, Sarah is one of the few cases where her original name IS the same as another, different character (i.e. Shining Force II's Sarah); despite both of them being healers, there is no apparent connection between the two characters.

Sarah is the second recorded Kyantol to have appeared in the Shining series.
